Looking unto Jesus...

“Looking unto Jesus the Author and Finisher of our faith;  who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame,  and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.” (Hebrews 12:2)

UNTO JESUS and not to the apparent success of our efforts.   The apparent success is not the measure of the real success; and besides, God has not told us to succeed, but to work; It is of our work that He requires an account, and not of our success, - why then concern ourselves with it? It is for us to scatter the seed, for God to gather the fruit; if not today, then it will be tomorrow; If He does not employ us to gather it, then He will employ others. Even when success is granted to us, it is always dangerous to fix our attention on it: On the one hand we are tempted to take some of the credit of it to ourselves; On the other hand we thus accustom ourselves to abate our zeal when we cease to perceive its result, That is to say, at the very time when we should redouble our energy. To look at the success is to walk by sight;  To look at Jesus, and to persevere in following Him and serving Him,  in spite of all discouragements, is to walk by faith.

On a hill...far away...

Ecuador.

 Phil made a cross with the verse: 1 John 4:16 written on it.  It is on a hill overlooking a small village on a mountain north of Quito..... in case you go there. :)

If any would not work...

“Be of good cheer.” 

 “If any would not work, neither should he eat.” (2 Thessalonians 3:10) 

 “In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread.” (Genesis 3:19)

     Industriousness and faith go hand in hand.   It does not signify, however, that one has real faith in God because he gives up temporal  employment and declares he is going to trust the Lord to meet his needs. 

There is a difference between faith and presumption.   Faith acts on the revealed Word of God.   Presumption attempts to harness God to a human program, and the result is inevitable failure. God has promised to answer the prayer of faith.   He has never promised to gratify the desires of men who do not act according to His Word.

LET IT REST!

Ah! how many hearts on the brink of anxiety and disquietude,  by the simple sentence have been made calm and happy! Some proceeding has wounded us by its want of tact;  LET IT REST; no one will think of it again. A harsh or unjust sentence irritates us; LET IT REST;  whoever may have given vent to it will be pleased to see it forgotten. A painful scandal is about to estrange us from an old friend; LET IT REST, and thus preserve our charity and peace of mind. A suspicious look is on the point of cooling our affection; LET IT REST; Our look of trust will restore confidence. Fancy! we, who are so careful to remove the briars from  our pathway for fear they should wound, yet take pleasure in collecting and piercing our hearts with thorns  that meet us in our daily association with one another! How childish and unreasonable we are!

An evening walk...

The night before the super moon in August we took an evening walk. No mosquitoes in Toronto! !!!
